Swarm Season

Swarm in Apple Tree

Swarm season is here and unless beekeepers are paying attention it is likely their hives will be swarming soon. In an effort to reach out to the public the MSBA has set up a telephone number and website to contact a local beekeeper. The number is (207) 619-4BEE or (207) 619-4233. Leave your name, town and a description of the swarm. The webpage can be found here MSBA Swarm removal hotline.

Beth and I went out to help two new beekeepers catch a great looking swarm in a apple tree.  A bottom board was attached to a  super and the bees were shaken off the branch into the box.  Thumbtacks were used to raise a piece of plywood off the super to make a temporary lid. Once the majority of bees were in the box, the others left the branch and flew down to join the rest.

Don’t forget if your swarm wasn’t as easily caught and moved into your house, you can contact us about removing them from buildings here.
